Blue Jays fall to defending Landmark champion Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elizabethtown College men's swim team dropped its first dual of the season to defending Landmark Conference champion, Catholic, 189.5-70.5, Saturday afternoon.

Both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams recorded season-best times and the Blue Jays collected nine runner-up finishes in 14 events.

Alex Pecher, Guillaume Gouronc, Casey Marshall and Alec Schneider opened the meet with a 1:41.63 in the 200 medley relay, chopping more than two seconds off the team's previous best time to set a season-best for the second week in a row.

All four members of the relay would swim to second-place in individual events later in the meet.

Pecher placed second to Catholic's Olivier Nguyen in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.06 in a tightly contested race.

Gouronc was the top finishing Blue Jay in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.27), just ahead of teammate Ben Spangler (1:06.90) as the duo took second and third, respectively. The two would flip spots in the 200 breast, where Spangler claimed second in 2:24.33 and Gouronc third in 2:24.92.

Marshall was second in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. The E-town sophomore came up with a 56.78 in the 100 fly, just off Matthew Mahon's winning time of 55.81 in a showdown of two of the conference's best butterfly specalists.

Schneider and CUA's George Isaacs tied for second in the 50 free, with both men hitting the touch pad at 22.85. Nick Petrella was second in the 200 backstroke (2:07.26), while David Foery was third in the 100 free, swimming a season-best 52.69.

Elizabethtown's dual meet record falls to 2-1 with Saturday's loss. The Blue Jays will get back to their own pool for next Saturday's 1 p.m. double dual against Drew and FDU-Florham.
