Women's soccer ousted by top seed Scranton in Landmark semifinal

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team was looking for its first Landmark Conference playoff victory Wednesday at top-seeded Scranton, but the Royals' experience showed in a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Scranton (13-3-2) limited Elizabethtown to six shots in the game and only two on goal. Janelle Barna had the first of the two in the fifth minute, but Colleen Berry made the save for the Royals.

Erica Licari opened the scoring in the semifinal with a goal in the 16th minute to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Nearly two minutes later, Meredith D'Angelo laced a shot toward goal. Hailey Parks got a glove to the ball and deflected it onto and off the crossbar. Parks had to come off her line in the 21st minute to made a sliding save on Kelly Pompey.

The Royals held the Jays without a shot after Shannon Conlon's shot was blocked in the ninth minute.

Elizabethtown (9-7-1) came out and possessed better than the first 45 minutes as the Jays settled into the game on Scranton's more compact playing field.

Haley Vozzella had E-town's best opportunity of the game in the 52nd minute. With bodies around the ball outside the left corner of the 18, Vozzella was able to run onto it in the middle of three players and blast a curling shot that was goal bound. Destined for upper netting, Berry, at the last second, got her fingertips to the ball and tipped it over the bar.

The Jays generated more chances in the following minutes, but Lydia Lawson had an attempt blocked and Lindsay Hoagland's shot went left of the goal.

Scranton was able to post two more goals in the second half and advance to Saturday's Landmark Conference Championship. The Royals will face either Susquehanna or Catholic in the final.

Parks made nine saves in goal for Elizabethtown.
