Men's soccer reaches third straight Landmark title game in PKs

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Ninety minutes of regulation wasn't enough to decide the outcome. Neither were two 10-minute golden goal overtime periods. Second-seeded Elizabethtown buried three penalty kicks, however, and goalkeeper Brian Gately came up with three massive saves to send the Blue Jays to the Landmark Conference championship game, 3-2 in PKs, after a 0-0 draw against Catholic in Tuesday night's semifinal at Ira R. Herr Field.

Elizabethtown will be making its third consecutive trip to the championship contest as it seeks its first Landmark title. The Blue Jays will face undefeated and 10th-ranked Drew (18-0-1), the top seed, in Madison, New Jersey on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Both teams had a second-half goal disallowed due to being offside.

In the 74th minute, Aaron Boyle's would-be goal was wiped out for the visiting Cardinals (7-7-5) and 53 seconds later Tyler Colasanto's drive into the goal for E-town was discredited as the assistant referee's flag went up.

The Blue Jays (10-6-2), who outshot Catholic 13-9 and 6-0 in the two overtime sessions had a golden opportunity to win it early in the first extra session. Gilbert Waso's shot from 12 yards out was swatted away by the right glove of CUA keeper Zachery Tashjy.

Clark Williamson had a rip in the second OT that Tashjy dove left to keep out.

Gately and Tashjy were up to the task early in the penalty kick shootout. E-town's Gately stopped CUA's first shooter, Ben Pesante, while Tashjy turned away Waso.

Elizabethtown scored on its next three attempts from JD Haaf, Sam Feehrer and Aaron Rathsam. Catholic's second and third shooters, Heston Priestley and Bradley Pierro each scored, but Gately stopped Tyler Martin and Cards' leading scorer Brian Galfond to send the Jays on.

Tuesday night marked the first time E-town advanced in the postseason on penalty kicks since the 2013 MAC Commonwealth semifinal against Alvernia.

E-town's Waso and Catholic's Priestley led their teams with three shots apiece. Gately made three saves between regulation and the overtime periods, while Tashjy had four.
