Blue Jays edge Gophers in dual opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown held on to defeat Landmark Conference foe Goucher 133.5-128.5 in its home-opening dual at the Alumni Pool Saturday afternoon.

Though the Gophers won nine of 14 events, the Blue Jays (1-0, 1-0 Landmark) were able to rack up enough points with their 2-4 finishes to hold on. Ironically enough, it was the 50-yard breaststroke where the teams split the victory that was the difference between an E-town win and a tie.

E-town senior Dru Schneider and Goucher's Kyanna Cadwallader hit the touch pad at the exact same time, sharing the win in 34.64. They split the nine points for first and four points for second, each taking 6.5 for their team. A victory by Cadwallader would have given the Gophers (2-1, 0-1) a 2.5-point bump and the Jays a subsequent 2.5-point decrease.

Schneider also contributed to the Blue Jays' 400 medley relay victory along with Abigail Mehring, Sadie Hawkins and Erika Cole. E-town's top team outlasted the Gophers' by less than a second, winning in 4:33.61.

Freshman Mehring and sophomore Hawkins would go on to individual wins as well.

Mehring led an Elizabethtown 1-2-3 in the 50 backstroke with a time of 32.50 ahead of Sarah Helt (33.75) and Hope Sury (33.81). Hawkins was first to finish in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:08.18.

The Blue Jays also got a win from last year's Landmark 400 IM bronze medalist Sara Lingo in the 200 IM (2:25.08).

Elizabethtown returns to the Alumni Pool next Saturday to swim against Gallaudet at 1 p.m.
