Jays rout Goucher in season-opening dual

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Guillaume Gouronc, Casey Marshall and Alex Pecher were three-event winners as Elizabethtown claimed 12 of 14 events in a 191-69 victory over Goucher Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Pool.

The Blue Jays didn't just overpower the Gophers with wins, but with their depth as well. Elizabethtown swept the top three positions in six events during their season-opening dual, and claimed 1-2 finishes in another two.

Though it's top relay team took a DQ in the 400-yard medley relay, the Blue Jays still managed to win the first event of the day with a 3:56.85 from Nick Petrella, Ben Spangler, Tommy Kuhn and Austin Dolaway.

Marshall got his first of two individual victories in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.34, just ahead of teammates Dolaway (1:56.64) and Petrella (1:57.82). Marshall also won the 100 butterfly in 55.14 after capturing the bronze medal in that event at the 2017 Landmark Championships.

Gouronc was the only E-town swimmer with three wins in individual events. The junior from France swept the breaststroke events with a win in the 50 (30.03) and 100 (1:05.47), and added a third victory in the 200 individual medley (2:12.36).

In his first home swim as a Blue Jay, Pecher claimed both backstroke events. He won the 50 by more than a second with a 26.59. Fellow E-town's entries Brian Sylvestri (27.78) and Sam Hirshberg (28.11) finished second and third, respectively.

Pecher swam 56.06 in the 100 back was Elizabethtown's fastest time since 2008 when Chris Miller went 55.82.

Elizabethtown got contributions up and down its lineup in support of its multi-event winners.

Alec Schneider posted a 22.53 to win the 50 free, a mere six-tenths of a second off his best time as a freshman when he placed 10th in the conference.

David Foery reigned in the 100 free (53.52), leading Dolaway and James McTighe in a 1-2-3 finish.

Schneider, Marshall, Pecher and Foery took the 400 free relay in 3:29.98 to cap a dominant effort by the Jays.

Goucher's (1-2, 0-1 Landmark) two victories came from Ian Furst in the distance events. Furst cruised in the 1000 free and edged E-town's Foery by 0.29 in the 500 (5:20.35).

Elizabethtown hosts Gallaudet next Saturday at 1 p.m.
