Men's XC takes third at Shippensburg

2016 Galen Piper Cross Country Challenge Men's 6k Results

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's cross country team opened up the 2016 racing season at Shippensburg's Galen Piper Cross Country Challenge Friday night. Samuel Gerstenbacher led the charge for the Blue Jays to help the team register a third-place finish out of eight teams scored.

All five E-town scorers were within 22 seconds from the first to cross, Gerstenbacher, to Tyler Alansky, who was the fifth Blue Jay to finish.

Gerstenbacher completed the 6,000-meter course in 20:18, five seconds ahead of Tom Fitzgerald.

Andrew Lesko provided a third-place team finish for Elizabethtown in 20:30. Keegan McDonough was just three seconds off his senior teammates' pace at 20:33. Alansky posted a 20:40 to round out the scoring for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown ended the night with 103 points, one point ahead of Gettysburg for third.

Matt Gillette of the Ship men's alumni team won the race in 19:08. The alums also won the meet with 22 points.

The men's cross country team will run at the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park next Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10:45 a.m.
