Goettfert paces golfers in fall premiere

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomore Felix Goettfert played Blue Ridge Country Club in 83 (+11) to tie for 29th as the Elizabethtown golf team opened its fall season with a 13th-place finish at the Messiah Falcon Fall Classic Tuesday afternoon.

Goettfert has only seen the Harrisburg course twice in his young career, but showed a marked improvement over the 91 he shot there back in April.

The German played solidly on most of the front nine, shooting even between holes 3-8 with four pars, a birdie and a bogey. He was in line to lay down a 2-over par 38 on the front, before a triple bogey on the par-4, 415-yard ninth left him with a 41. Goettfert's round concluded with three pars and a 42 coming in, but an 83 was tied for his second best round as a Blue Jay, surpassed only by the 81 he shot at last fall's Stevenson Invitational.

Three Blue Jays posted scores in the 80s for coach Jim Reed. Freshman Garrett Leib, making his Elizabethtown debut, carded an 88, with Chuck Johnston's 89 in close proximity.

Leib's round on the par-72, 6,615-yard course featured seven pars, while Johnston led all E-town players with eight.

Junior Craig Eidle shot 97, but came away with a birdie on No. 10, a 395-yard par 4, along with three pars on the back nine.

Muhlenberg's 16-over par 304 won the tournament ahead of Lebanon Valley's 309 (+21) and Gettysburg's 310 (+22). The top of the leaderboard saw three players tie for individual medalist honors at a 2-under 70, with Gettysburg's Dane Sethre-Hofstad prevailing over Messiah's Nate Haney and Pitt-Greensburg's Javon Trought on tiebreaker criteria.

Elizabethtown will return to Harrisburg this coming Sunday and Monday for the Penn State Harrisburg Invitational at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course. The tournament tees off at 11:30 a.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday.
