Blue Jays stop Scranton, advance to Landmark Championship

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Joe Clark totaled five points and Davis Miracle made nine saves as the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team advanced to the first conference championship game in team history with an 11-4 win over Scranton in the Landmark semifinals Wednesday.

Clark registered his sixth hat trick of the season and pulled within two goals of becoming the program's fourth 100-goal scorer.

Scranton (11-6), the conference's top defense, watched as the Blue Jays stuck on their every move. A stingy E-town (12-5) defense allowed no more than one goal in any quarter and forced seven of the Royals' 15 turnovers.

Elizabethtown, top seed for the second year in a row, avenged last year's loss to fourth-seeded Catholic in the semifinals. Ironically, the Blue Jays will host the third-seeded Cardinals, 8-6 victors over No. 2 Susquehanna, in the championship game at Wolf Field Saturday at 1 p.m.

Clark put the Jays up early, scoring off a pass from Jason Clough 1:05 into the first quarter. Jake Haimson would get the equalizer with under five minutes left in the period as the teams ended the first tied.

A late man-up opportunity for the Royals went awry when Elizabethtown got possession late in the first and held for the horn. Instead of a face-off to start the second, the Blue Jays retained possession and Clark found Cody Larkin for a man-down goal 13 seconds into the second.

Larkin added a second goal in the quarter, along with tallies from Mike Specht, Clough and Nick Specht. E-town outscored Scranton 4-1 in the second and fourth quarters.

The Royals never got closer than three the rest of the way. Nick Specht and Phil Kyger scored third quarter g oals, and the Blue Jays would put in four unaswered to close out the win in the fourth.

Mike Tangredi led the defense with a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls. Fellow senior Jake Snyder picked up three GBs and caused a turnover of his own.

Elizabethtown protected the ball with great efficiency, turning it over a season-low eight times. In two meetings against Scranton this season, the Blue Jays limited themselves to 19 giveaways.

The Blue Jays grabbed 29 ground balls to the Royals' 27. Matt Rucci (4-of-13) and Jeremy Klipple (1-of-1) won face-offs against Landmark leader Adam Drury (11-of-16).

All-Landmark Second Team goalie Nicholas McKaba stopped 13 shots, but was solved 11 times. It was just the second time McKaba allowed 10 goals or more in a game all season.

Miracle made three of his nine saves in the first quarter and protected the Jays' lead late with four in the fourth.

Mike Specht had a goal and two assists for the Blue and Gray, while Clough (1g, 1a), Dan Bednarik (1g, 1a), Larkin (2g) and Kyger (2g) collected multi-point games.

Prior to Wednesday's game, Elizabethtown had been to the conference semifinals eight times, including seven times in eight seasons as members of the Middle Atlantic Conference between 2004-11.
