Golf hosts Blue Jay Classic

HERSHEY, Pa.  –  Mother Nature threatened to spoil Elizabethtown's Blue Jay Classic Thursday, but the rain eventually subsided in time for sophomore Craig Eidle to shoot a career best 84 as men's golf hosted its home tournament on the East Course at Hershey Country Club.

The tournament was delayed for nearly two hours while the course responded to heavy mid-morning downpours that put play in jeopardy. Fortunately, with 21 teams and more than 100 golfers in attendance, things eventually got going and proceeded smoothly.

Eidle bettered his former career best by five shots and showed a 14-stroke improvement over his effort at Elizabethtown's spring tournament last year. The Boyertown native sank a pair of birdie putts on the par-3 second and par-4 11th. Eidle also sprinkled six pars into his round which was 13-over par and tied for 49th in the field of 107.

The Blue Jays entered seven in the tournament, but were without three of their top five scoring players in Kyle Hakun (81.2 average), Felix Goettfert (84.0) and Chuck Johnston (85.9).

Senior Adam Amspacher and freshman Santiago Garcia each carded a 90 (+19), while rookie Tyler Goldberg played his round in a season low 92 (+21).

Amspacher had a birdie on No. 14, a 424-yard par-5. Garcia put a tough front nine behind him to start the back strong with two birdies and two pars in his first six holes. The Colombian birdied 12, a 390-yard par-4, and 14.

Chris Heuer, playing as an individual, set a new personal low round with a 96. Rick Stone and Adam Strayton also turned in rounds for the Blue and Gray.

Eastern University, led by individual medalist Ryan Torresin, held off Stevenson for the tournament title. The Eagles combined to shoot 308 (+24), with the Mustangs putting up a 313 (+29). Muhlenberg (316, +32) and York (319, +35) were right on Stevenson's heels, while Cabrini (322, +38) completed the top five.

Torresin and Alvernia's Brett Fernandes shared the top spot on the leaderboard with 1-over par 72s, but medalist honors went to Torresin on the United States Golf Association's (USGA) Handicap Tiebreaker, which determined a winner based on the players' scores on the hardest playing hole.

Thursday, that was No. 3, a 424-yard par-4. Torresin parred the hole, while Fernandes bogied.

Elizabethtown concluded the day in 20th with a score of 356 (+72). The Blue Jays won't tee it up again until Saturday, April 16, at the Gettysburg Spring Invitational.
