Hakun records top 10, golfers close season at Messiah Classic

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Junior Kyle Hakun shot a season best 78 and recorded his second top 10 in the Elizabethtown College golf team's 2015-16 finale at the Messiah Falcon Spring Classic Tuesday.

The Blue Jays played to a 12th-place finish in the 15-team field at the par 72, 6,635-yard, Blue Ridge Country Club

Hakun's four birdies were tied for the tournament-high with Rutgers-Camden's Zach Arsenault, who took individual medalist honors with an even round of 72.

The Springfield, Pa., product played both the front nine and back nine in 39. He responded to bogeys on holes No. 1 and 2 with three consecutive birdies. Hakun started his run by putting for a three on the 340-yard, par 4, No. 3, and followed with another three spot on the 375-yard, par 4, No. 4.

Hakun snuck in his third straight birdie by playing the 490-yard, par 5, No. 5, the third longest hole on the course, in four. The Blue Jay leader was the only player in the field to string together three birdies in a row. Hakun also shot birdie on No. 16, a par 3 playing at 170 yards.

Hakun finished as part of a five-way tie for 10th. Seventeen of the 80 players entered in Tuesday's tournament shot under 80, but only Arsenault kept from going over par.

Freshman Rick Stone knocked down eight pars on his way to a career best 85. Sophomore Craig Eidle followed with an 87 and Chuck Johnston carded an 89. Johnston's round included eight pars and Eidle's seven.

Felix Goettfert birdied the par 3 13th before finishing in 91 and Tyler Goldberg shot 95 playing as an individual.

With Arsenault leading the way, Rutgers-Camden edged Messiah for the Classic crown. RUC scored a 310 (+22) to the host Falcons' 313 (+25). Eastern (314, +26), Gettysburg (317, +29) and Hood (321, +33) rounded out the top five.
