Men's lacrosse starts fast, handles Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Elizabethtown opened up a 5-0 lead after the first quarter behind a pair of goals from Joe Clark and Phil Kyger, cruising to a 12-4 victory at Guilford Wednesday afternoon.

Kyger scored a team-high four goals on the afternoon, a career-high. He opened the scoring at 13:19 of the first with help from Clark. Shortly thereafer, Cody Larkin made it 2-0, taking a pass from Jake Evans and sending a shot past Quakers' (1-2) goalie Parker Styles.

Clark netted his eighth and ninth goals of the season at 8:52 and 5:18 of the period, before setting up Kyger's buzzer beater that gave the Blue Jays (2-1) a commanding five-goal lead. The junior attack from Hershey registered four of his six points in the first quarter and moved ahead of Matt Seiboth for sixth on the program's all-time scoring list with 119 points (68 goals, 51 assists).

E-town committed just four turnovers in the first half and six through three quarters. Guilford, meanwhile, gave it away seven times in the first quarter alone. The Quakers were bogged down by 21 turnovers, four of which were forced by senior Mike Tangredi. Tangredi also picked up a team-high five ground balls.

Luke Stephens caused a pair of Quaker turnovers and collected four ground balls.

Mike Specht and Dan Bednarik scored second-quarter goals for the Blue Jays. Two more goals from Kyger to late in the third quarter, including his fourth of the day on the man-advantage, extended their lead to 9-1.

Nick Specht and Andrew Watts' first career goal capped the scoring for Elizabethtown in the fourth.

Freshman goalie Brandon Calle made his first career start a memorable one, stopping eight shots for the win. Calle wasn't called upon to make a save in the first, but racked up four in the third.

Each team took 30 shots, but a dominant first quarter saw the Blue Jays take a 10-3 advantage in shots early. The Blue Jays were 20-of-23 on clears, but the Quakers won 12-of-17 face-offs. Guilford's Connor Manning won 11-of-15.

Adam Fiore had two goals to pace the hosts on offense.

Elizabethtown will be back on Wolf Field Saturday when Messiah visits for a 1 p.m. start.
