Marshall, Petrella pick up wins as Jays split double dual

MADISON, N.J. -- Talented freshman Casey Marshall set new personal records in winning the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, and Nick Petrella claimed the 100-yard backstroke as Elizabethtown men's swimming defeated FDU-Florham 138-63 and fell to host Drew 113-86 in a double dual Saturday.

Marshall crushed his former PR in the 200 free, going nearly five seconds quicker to win in 1:50.91. Marshall's victory came by more than 1.5 seconds over second-place Bohdan Semak of FDU-Florham and ranked sixth fastest in the Landmark Conference this season.

A showdown between two of the fastest three 100 fly swimmers in the conference this season never materialized, as Drew's Michael Ma, ranked first in the Landmark at 54.46, did not compete in the event. Instead, Marshall flew to the win in a personal best time of 54.61, moving from third to second in the conference and coming within .75 seconds of Tommy Kuhn's school record 53.86.

Petrella registered the Blue Jays' (3-3) remaining win in the 100 back, leading teammate Brian Sylvestri in sweep of the top two spots. Petrella finished in 58.80 and Sylvestri timed in at 1:00.99.

Elizabethtown set new season-best times in both the 400 medley relay and 200 free relays.

In the meet-opening 400 medley relay, Petrella, Kieran Koehler, Marshall and Alec Schneider secured a runner-up finish in 3:49.70, .72 better than a 3:50.42 turned in earlier this month at Goucher.

E-town gained almost three seconds on its former best in the 200 free relay. Schneider, Sylvestri, Kuhn and Kieran Koehler took second in 1:34.06, Saturday.

Schneider just slipped by his previous PR in the 50 free, swimming a 23.24, for second, while Guillaume Gouronc set a new season fast time of 1:03.67 in the 100 breast .

Ben Spangler shot up to second on the team in the 500 free with a 5:45.53 in his season debut in the event.

The Blue Jay men will compete for the final time this calendar year Monday evening at 6 at Lebanon Valley.
