Early goals end Blue Jays' season in NCAA Second Round

NEWARK, N.J. -- No. 10 Rutgers-Newark scored twice in the first 14:24 of Sunday's NCAA Division III Championship Second Round game. It was all the Scarlet Raiders needed to eliminate the Elizabethtown men's soccer team, 2-0.

The Blue Jays knew they were in for a tussle with the high-powered Scarlet Raiders (20-3), but were not anticipating having to play from behind less than three minutes in.

That's the situation Elizabethtown (14-4-2) found itself in, however. Chigozie Atubi chased down a ball and fed it to Alex Torres, who pinged one off the left post and in just 2:36 in on Rutgers-Newark's first shot of the game.

The hosts scored on two of their first three shots, doubling their lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute when Fabio De Sousa finished off a pass from Atubi.

The Scarlet Raiders had a 12-game winning streak abruptly snapped by Montclair State in the NJAC semifinals, but have responded with a pair of convincing wins to start the national tournament and will now move on to the 'Sweet 16' for the first time in program history.

Nearing the end of the first half, Rutgers-Newark defender Isaiah Kuris cleared away a Noah Patmore attempt headed for the net.

E-town did what it could to push the pace after halftime, outshooting Rutgers-Newark 8-2 in the second half and 13-9 for the game.

The Jays' best chance of the half came in the 71st minute when sophomore Gilbert Waso attempt went inches right of the frame.

Ryan Sandell stopped two shots for the Blue and Gray, which also out-cornered the Scarlet Raiders 9-3. Andres Medlna made three saves at the other end.

Elizabethtown, the Landmark runner-up, was appearing in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship tournament for the first time since 2004. The Blue Jays' season comes to a close with a 14-4-2 record.

Rutgers-Newark will face SUNY Oneonta in the Sweet 16 next weekend.
