Lingo wins a pair as Jays fall to Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown freshman Sara Lingo won the 200-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle Saturday, but a deep Catholic team overpowered the Blue Jays for a 195-65 victory at the Alumni Pool.

Lingo set the team's season-best times in both of her wins, breaking her own previous best each time.

In the 200 back, the Delawarean pulled away from Cardinal teammates Rachel Chain and Emily Earley to win by more than five seconds in 2:17.46. Lingo picked up just over two seconds over the 2:19.59 she swam back on Oct. 22, against York (Pa.), and put forth the fifth fastest time in the Landmark this season in the process.

Lingo jumped up to eighth in the conference with her winning 500 free time of 5:36.97. She shed 10.23 seconds off her former personal best and held off Catholic's Rachael Zarlinski by better than four seconds.

While the Jays were otherwise kept out of the win column on the day, a handful of team fast times were set.

Sophomore Erika Cole broke into the 26-second bracket in the 50 free for the first time in 2016-17. Cole put down a 26.75, coming up inches short of the win against Meaghan Rush's 26.61 for CUA.

Mariselle Parisi, a senior from Reading, Pennsylvania, recorded Elizabethtown's fastest 200 breaststroke time of the season by more than 2.5 seconds to finish runner-up in 2:46.56.

E-town ended the meet on a high note, cutting 7.45 seconds in the 200 free relay. Cole, Megan Anderson, Lingo and Maddie Lasko were in contention for the victory, but settled for third in a closely contested finish with a time of 1:49.08. The split between the top three relays was less than half a second.

Catholic, last year's Landmark runner-up, improved to 3-1 (2-1 Landmark) on the season, while the Blue Jays fell to 1-3 (0-2) with the defeat.

E-town will take part in a double dual at Drew next Saturday. The Landmark rivals will be joined by Drew neighbor FDU-Florham for a 1 p.m. start.
