Blue Jays bring their best to sweep Lebanon Valley

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- On an emotional night in Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown got a win it desperately needed. The Blue Jays snapped a seven-match slide by sweeping Lebanon Valley, on a 10-match winning streak of its own, 3-0, Wednesday evening.

A moment of silence was observed prior to the match in memory of Debi Murray, a former volunteer assistant coach and team mentor, who succumbed to cancer following multiple courageous battles last Saturday.

Elizabethtown (5-14) came out juiced up in the first set, hitting .355 with 13 kills to leave the Dutchmen in the dust, 25-14. Mackenzie Garner, the Landmark leader in hitting percentage, only helped hers with six kills and no errors on seven attempts in the opening set.

Two kills from Garner, one each by Anna Simpson and Elle Shatto, along with aces from Sarah Schneider and Katie Kennedy helped the Jays rocket to a 9-3 lead. Lebanon Valley would briefly close within 9-8 on a Jess Attieh ace, but the home team collected four of the next five points to pad its advantage.

The Blue Jays wouldn't slow up in the second, going on a 7-0 run midway through the set to open up an 18-11 lead. Three Schneider kills and back-to-back aces from Gabby Anders served as the catalyst for the run. LVC (12-5) would never threaten in the set, as E-town grabbed a 2-0 lead via a 25-17 decision.

Elizabethtown's mettle would be tested late in the third as Lebanon Valley looked to extend the match. The Jays had a 24-23 lead on Shatto's 14th kill of the night, but two E-town errors put the Dutchmen out in front 26-25. The hosts could have hung their heads and hoped for better luck in the fourth, but showed resiliency, getting a kill from Garner, an LVC error and a combo block by Garner and Anders to finish off the Dutchmen, 27-25.

Garner pounded the ball all evening, tying Shatto for the team lead with 14 kills while hitting an impressive .480 on 25 attempts (14 kills-2 errors-25 attempts). Shatto was also efficient in her 14-kill performance, hitting .294 on 34 attempts, and the Blue Jays had their third best hitting night of the season with a .241 percentage.

Anders delivered her third 40-assist match of the fall with exactly 40 to lead all players. Schneider amassed eight kills, three aces and 17 digs, while Shatto registered her fourth double-double on the strength of 10 digs. The freshman from Sykesville, Maryland, was especially good in the third set, going for eight kills and five digs.

Reigning AVCA Division III National Player of the Week Greta Weidemoyer was all over the place for the Dutchmen, just missing a triple-double by a dig. Weidemoyer ended the night with 10 kills, 12 assists and nine digs -all team-highs. Attieh was the only other Dutchmen player to get anything going, totaling nine kills and five digs.

The win was Elizabethtown's first over LVC since the 2010 regular season, ending six consecutive victories by the Dutchmen in the series.

E-town gets the weekend off before returning to Thompson next Tuesday to face York (Pa.) in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
