Chambers, Novak carry Blue Jays to Senior Day win over Juniata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown did everything it needed to do to keep its season alive Saturday, but couldn't quite get all the help it needed around the conference to advance to the postseason.

Still, the Blue Jays were mighty impressive in a 5-0 shutout of Juniata at Ira R. Herr Field, getting two goals from Lydia Lawson and a goal and an assist from Morgan Chambers to lead the way.

Chambers was one of six senior players honored prior to the regular season home finale along with manager Olivia Fryberger. All six players: Maddie Burkhardt, Chambers, Miriah Dwyer, Elyse Koterwas, Callie McClanahan and Caroline Novak drew into the starting lineup.

Chambers, a midfielder from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, who started 14-of-16 games for the Blue and Gray in 2016, had her best game in an E-town uniform with a career-high three points. She set up Lawson's eighth goal of the season less than 10 minutes into the game and capped her team's first half scoring with her second goal of the fall in the 36th minute.

The Blue Jays also got a first half goal from Chelsea Dantona --her first of the year-- in the 33rd minute to take a 3-0 lead at the break.

Maria Boretti set up Lawson for for her second goal of the afternoon in the 51st minute. Lawson, a Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, native, finished her rookie season with team-highs of nine goals and 18 points. Saturday's performance was her second multi-goal game of the season.

Novak completed the scoring by beating Eagles' (4-9-3, 0-7 Landmark) keeper Erin Mueller with a penalty kick in the 54th minute.

While the Blue Jays (6-10, 4-3) were busy lighting up the scoreboard, Moravian took care of Susquehanna, 2-0, to open the door for Elizabethtown to slide into the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championship tournament. E-town still needed a Catholic win or draw against conference-leading Scranton.

The Cardinals nearly pulled through, scoring in the 88th minute of regulation to tie Scranton 1-1. However, just 1:50 into double overtime, the Royals netted the game-winner to forge a three-way tie between Catholic, Elizabethtown and Susquehanna for the third and fourth spots. Based on tiebreaker criteria, the Landmark had to go to the third set of circumstances, as all three teams went 1-1-0 head-to-head and held identical records against the conference's five remaining schools this season.

The third criteria was goal differential among the three tied teams. Catholic was +1 to claim the third seed and Susquehanna even to top E-town (-1) for the final spot.

Elizabethtown outshot Juniata 17-7 and owned an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Chambers, Lawson and Novak shared the team lead with four shots each. Hailey Parks started in goal and made two saves over 70:04 before turning the net over to Nicole Boyd. Boyd collected a pair of saves as well.
