Frostburg State holds off Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Freshman Dayna Stewart won the 200-yard butterfly and senior Rachel Engelhardt captured the 500-yard freestyle, but it was not enough to take down Frostburg State Monday evening. The Bobcats escaped Alumni Pool with a 102-99 victory.

Stewart's winning 200 fly time of 2:29.87 was the 13th fastest mark in the Landmark Conference this season. The Whiting, N.J., product out paced her closest competition by more than 40 seconds Monday.

Engelhardt, swimming in her final home meet, closed on a high note by putting down a 5:52.44 to win the 500 free ahead of the Bobcats' (6-7) Sydney Fazenbaker. Sarah Alps was third (6:31.39) and Katie Derreth fourth in a season best 6:45.69.

Elizabethtown (4-6) also got a win in the 400 free relay as Stewart, Amanda Long, Mariselle Parisi and Erika Cole completed the event in 4:03.22, to beat out FSU by just over two seconds.

The meet was there for the Blue Jays, but Frostburg State standout sprinter Macey Nitchie saved her team in the 400 medley relay with a 54.16 100 free split to win the event by one-tenth of a second. Frostburg swam 4:24.53 to E-town's 4:24.65.

Engelhardt earned a runner-up finish in the 200 free, but came within inches of the win. Her time of 2:08.70 was three-hundredths off Emily Turner's time of 2:08.67.

Parisi turned in a 20:48.93 to finish second in the 1650 free, while Cole's 27.03 was good for second in the 50 free.

Dru Schneider and Bonnie Lisk went 2-3 in the 100 individual medley, with Lisk and Madison Lasko doing the same in the 100 free. Megan Anderson and Karlie Kimball (personal season best 2:27.22) followed suit in the 200 back. Schneider's season best 2:54.39 in the 200 breast and a 3:00.17 from Lasko gave the Jays a fourth 2-3 finish.

E-town finishes the regular season Saturday at McDaniel.
