Men's swimming wins home finale over Frostburg State

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Freshmen Sam Hirshberg, Tommy Kuhn and Nick Petrella, along with sophomore David Foery registered a pair of wins as the Elizabethtown men's swim team wrapped up its 2015-16 home schedule with a 111-87 victory over Frostburg State Monday night.

The Blue Jays led from the start behind a winning, season best time of 3:50.17 from the 400-yard medley relay team. Petrella, Guillaume Gouronc, Kuhn and David Foery teamed up for the comeback win, lowering the team's top time in the event by more than 8.5 seconds. Kuhn's 100-yard butterfly split of 55.55 chopped close to 2.5 seconds off Frostburg's advantage and Foery finished strong with a 50.91 100 free split to Marquell Proctor's 54.19 as the hosts took the 11 points for first.

Hirshberg earned his first win of the night in the 200 free, setting a new PR of 1:58.29, down more than a second from his former best of 1:59.67. The Hummelstown native was followed by Ben Spangler (2:03.73) in third and Brandon Wolf (season best 2:21.86) in fourth.

Even when the Jays were up against the Bobcats' (3-10) speedsters in the sprint freestyle, they performed strong enough to even out the score. In the 50 free, Kuhn (23.87) was runner-up, with Petrella and Kieran Koehler swimming identical times of 24.39 to tie for third.

Kuhn continued his outstanding freshman season out touching Alek Combs for a victory in the 200 fly. In his first appearance in the event this season, Kuhn clocked in with a 2:17.31.

Petrella jumped two spots to 18th in the Landmark Conference after winning the 200 backstroke in a season fast 2:09.03. Hirshberg made it a 1-2 finish for the Jays (3-6) by swimming a 2:15.66.

Elizabethtown had the meet secure heading into the 400 free relay as long as both of its relays didn't DQ, but the Jays weren't looking for just the dual victory. Kieran Koehler, Tristan Koehler, Hirshberg and Foery combined to win the final event of the night in a team best 3:31.95, 0.36 ahead of the Bobcats' top crew.

Gouronc posted a pair of second-place finishes in addition to helping the 400 medley relay teamto victory. The Frenchman swam a season best 1:00.91 in the 100 individual medley and a 2:27.18 in the 200 breaststroke. Foery was runner-up in the 1650 free (20:26.96), an event Elizabethtown competed in for the first time this season.

Other runner-up finishes came from Spangler (100 free) and Jake Stonecipher (500 free).

The Blue Jays finish the regular season with a non-conference dual at McDaniel Saturday. They'll compete at the Landmark Championships Feb. 12-14.
