Waso, Blue Jays capture Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic crown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Freshman Gilbert Waso supplied both goals Sunday afternoon as Elizabethtown blanked DeSales 2-0 to take the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic title.

For the third time in as many games this season, the Blue Jays scored the opening goal in the first 10 minutes. Sunday's icebreaker was nearly a mirror image of Saturday's against Dickinson, with Waso and Cal Graziano perfecting a give-and-go, Graziano threading the final pass across to Waso at the left post for the eventual game-winner in the eighth minute.

Elizabethtown's early surge was answered by a strong possession game from the Bulldogs (2-1). Coached by former Blue Jay George Crampton, DeSales ended the first half with four shots, but all three on goal were smuggled by Rodrigo Barrera.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Waso was at it again. Martin Fevre's free kick from just inside midfield switched fields and Waso provided a volley smash on one bounce that beat DeSales goalkeeper Dan Sulpizio cleanly. Waso finished the Classic with three goals in two games, earning him offensive most valuable player honors.

Moments after Waso made it 2-nil, another newcomer, Sam Feehrer, broke free down the right wing and just missed the upper right corner with a well struck ball.

Sulpizio couldn't do much with Waso, but made a pair of critical second half saves on Shane Votto headers to keep DeSales within striking distance. Sulpizio was named defensive MVP of the Classic, but was forced to leave with an injury with just over 14 minutes to play. His replacement, Anthony D'Angelo, stepped right in and stopped two Steve Eneme shots at point blank range.

E-town (3-0) set a new season-high with 20 shots and took nine corner kicks in the final 45 minutes. The Jays held DeSales without a single corner and with three straight victories to open the season, are off to their best start since 2009.

Waso and Graziano each extended their point scoring streaks to three games. Graziano finished with a goal and two assists on the weekend. Barrera registered four saves for his first shutout this season and ninth of his career.

The Blue Jays await their first road test Wednesday at Wilkes. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
