Women's cross country wins Galen E. Piper XC Challenge

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — For the second time in four years, the Elizabethtown College women's cross country team won the Galen E. Piper XC Challenge at Shippensburg University. The Blue Jays were the only team to place all five runners in the top 20, scoring a meet-low 63 points. Brenna McNamee was E-town's top finisher.

McNamee, the Landmark Conference steeplechase champion during the outdoor season, showed her cross country prowess Friday night on the 4k course. The sophomore was seventh overall and the first Blue Jay to finish. Her time was 15:13. The next two runners, Lydia Dearie and Casey Quinto, both finished within four seconds of McNamee. Dearie was eighth in 15:15 and Quinto took ninth in 15:17 to give E-town three in the top ten.

Freshman Colleen Kernan made a great first impression for E-town, scoring in her first collegiate race as the fourth runner across for the blue and grey. Kernan ran 15:42 and was 19th overall. Kelsey Brady, the Landmark's Outdoor Rookie of the Year, was one place behind Kernan, taking 20th in 15:43.

Elizabethtown finished six points ahead of second-place Dickinson, who ended up with 69 points. The Red Devils were ranked No. 2 in the Mideast Region Preseason Poll by the USTFCCCA and No. 18 nationally. E-town is No. 3 in the Mideast and No. 23 in the country.

Mary Dell, a Shippensburg alum, won the meet in 14:20. The current Shippensburg team placed third with 72 points.

The women's team will welcome its own alumni back to Elizabethtown for its Blue Jay Alumni Challenge on Saturday, September 12.
