Dearie leads women's XC to double dual victory

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Mother Nature joined the Elizabethtown College women's cross country team at its home meet Saturday morning. A light rain fell from the sky as the Blue Jays hosted its alums and Gwynedd Mercy on its 2K campus loop. In double dual meet scoring, the women's team defeated Gwynedd 15-50 and the alums 19-43. Lydia Dearie was the overall winner of the meet.

Dearie, the fourth-place finisher at the same meet a season ago in her first collegiate race, finished ten seconds clear of the next runner, alum Taryn Shank. Dearie crossed in 16:03.36 for her second straight top ten finish. She was eighth last week at Shippensburg.

Shank, a four-time all-conference runner from 2009 to 2012 was the runner-up in 16:13.45. She was followed by Casey Quinto in third at 16:22.51 and reigning Landmark Conference Women's XC Athlete of the Week Brenna McNamee. McNamee's fourth-place time was 16:35.91. Brianna Earnshaw rounded out the top five in 16:52.21.

Elizabethtown filled the latter half of the top ten with three more runners. Kelsey Brady was sixth, Colleen Kernan was seventh and Maria Anderson was ninth. Eileen Cody '14 was eighth and Christina Smith of Gwynedd Mercy was tenth.

The women's cross country team will have a weekend off before the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational in Newville, Pa. on Saturday, September 26 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
