Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jays concede in second half, draw with Union (N.Y.)

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team began its season by doing something it hadn't done all of 2014; tie. The Blue Jays let a 1-0 lead slip away in the second half and drew with Union (N.Y.) to start 2015.

E-town (0-0-1) held the offensive advantage throughout the first half, outshooting the Dutchwomen 9-4, but had trouble putting the ball on goal in the early going.

Union (0-0-1) had an early chance saved by Dana Robidoux on Katie Monahan's header. Robidoux was called upon again ten minutes later, saving another Monahan attempt.

The momentum picked up for EC around the 20th minute as Kaceyanne Cerankowski and Lauren Berry registered shots. Union keeper Erica Matteo saved Berry's shot to keep the game level.

Less than a minute after Robidoux's fourth save of the first half, Kara Weller notched the game's opening game in the 28th minute in an unusual manner. Known for her long throws, Weller launched the ball toward goal. A high bounce off the grass at Ira R. Herr Field went over the goalie's head and tipped off the gloves of her outstretched hands and into the back of the net.

Elizabethtown held the 1-0 lead going into the half, but nearly had it doubled when Miriah Dwyer's shot banged off the underside of the crossbar and back out seconds before time expired.

The Dutchwomen came out with something to prove to start the second half, seizing the momentum that eventually paid off in the game-tying goal.

A throw-in found the feet of Sydney Keane, who turned toward goal, outside the left of the 18-yard box, and sent a drive to the far right corner of the net for her first of the season.

Both squads had a few chances in the overtime periods, but neither could come upon the game-winner, ending the 110-minute contest in a stalemate.

Trisha Clark and Berry each had a team-high four shots. Robidoux ended the game having made six saves. Her counterpart, Matteo, also had six saves in the game.

The Blue Jays travel to Salem, Va. for the Roanoke Invitational over the weekend. They face Lynchburg to open the tournament on Saturday, September 5 at 2:30 p.m.
