Catholic rallies to beat Blue Jays in Landmark semifinal

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Kevin Meakim started the scoring for the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon as the Jays looked poised to advance to Saturday's Landmark Conference title game. However, despite trailing at the half, fourth-seeded Catholic outscored E-town in the second half and hung on for an 11-10 victory.

Elizabethtown (14-3) was out to a 5-0 lead through the first ten minutes of the first quarter, getting goals from five different players. Meakim's goal came in the first minute of play, scoring unassisted. The freshman then assisted on Connor Rowe's seventh of the year a little less than four minutes later.

Joe Clark found Russ LeClair for his 34th of the season to make it 3-0. Mike Specht and Clark (Jimmy Waters assist) pushed the lead to 5-0 with 4:52 remaining in the first. Catholic (10-5) got on the board with less than 30 seconds left in the period on an Ethan Rodriguez goal.

LeClair tallied goal No. 35 four minutes into the second before assisting on Cody Larkin's first of the game minutes later. LeClair's assist, one of two in the game, brought him to 100 career points. The senior completed his first-half hat trick, making it 8-2 Blue Jays with seven seconds to go before the break.

The Cardinals turned it around in the second half and seized momentum early on. Catholic converted several man-up opportunities to get back into the game. The Cardinals recorded the first five goals of the third quarter and were down just a goal by the 8:40 mark of the third quarter. Four of the five were man-up goals.

LeClair found Larkin for his second of the game and 21st of the season to provide a bit of breathing room for E-town at 9-7, but Catholic charged back once more.

Tim Keith (two) and Brian Keith combined for the next three goals of the game as CUA took its first lead of the game at 10-9 after Tim Keith's third of the afternoon.

Larkin scored unassisted to knot the contest at 10-10 with 11:33 to go, but Brian Keith scored what proved to be the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining.

The Cardinals' defense held up the rest of the way as Catholic upset the top-seeded Blue Jays.

LeClair led E-town with five points (3g, 2a) while Larkin also had a hat-trick. Clark, Mike Specht, and Meakim each had a goal and an assist. Chris Wenger had eight saves in goal.
