Moravian slides past softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Two days after putting up a season-high 14 runs, the Elizabethtown College softball team's bats were quieted by Moravian in Friday's Landmark doubleheader. The Greyhounds did not allow the Blue Jays to record a run in either game en route to a two-game sweep. The conference games were the first of the season for both teams.

Josie Novak held the Elizabethtown (5-9, 0-2 Landmark) offense in check after the Jays scored 14 runs in game two Wednesday evening at Dickinson. Against Novak, E-town could only manage four hits over seven innings.

Moravian (10-2, 2-0 Landmark) threatened in the first inning, but Keli Krause got out of it unscathed, getting Abby Jeffries to ground out to end the inning.

Novak sat down the Jays in order through the first three innings. Becky Becher, 2-for-3 at the plate in game one, broke up the no-hitter with a single to lead off the fourth.

Kirstin Blass came through with a key play in the bottom of the fourth, throwing out Jeffries at the plate to keep it a scoreless tie. Jeffries had walked to start the inning and was at third with one out. Julie Siragusa, on to pinch hit, reached on a fielder's choice, where Blass went home to Kelsey Brown to record the out. Krause got a pop up to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Moravian recorded seven hits in game one, and all it took was one to make the difference. With a runner on first and one out in the fifth, Jen Dalickas smacked a two-run home run to left center to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead. They were the only runs of the game.

E-town had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh and a chance to prolong the game, but Novak got the fly out to end the first game.

Krause pitched all six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. She fell to 1-3 on the season. Novak improved to 5-1.

Moravian did its damage all within the first three innings of game two, scoring once in the first, four in the second, and two more in the third.

Lizzie Mack recorded an RBI groundout in the first before Dior George homered in the second, a three-run shot. Jeffries added an RBI single as the Greyhounds were out 5-0. Mary Schlosbon singled in the third, allowing two more runs to score.

Jordan Nowacki, Kaylee Werner, and Laura Tomasetti were all able to reach base in the second, but the Jays couldn't generate any runs from it. Maeve McGill and Blass both singled in the third, but once again, they weren't able to score against Moravian starter Amanda Carisone.

Carisone allowed just three hits over the final four innings to keep the 7-0 lead in tact. Jessica White hit a one-out double in the sixth, which turned out to be the final chance for the Blue Jays to plate a run. Carisone got a foul out and strike out to end the inning.

Tomasetti fell to 3-3, throwing six innings and striking out three. Carisone moved to 5-1 with a six-hit shutout.

The softball team will travel to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, March 29 for a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Catholic. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
