Blue Jays run away from Delaware Valley

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown overwhelmed a first-year Delaware Valley program playing in just its third game by scoring 10 first half goals and 14 unanswered in a 14-1 victory at Wolf Field Wednesday afternoon.

Eight player factored into the scoring and there were seven different goal scorers for the Blue and Gray, which won its third in a row.

Cody Larkin put the Jays (4-2) ahead less than five minutes into the game with his fourth goal of the season from Jimmy Waters. Elizabethtown also got goals from Kevin Meakim and Mike Specht, and two from Russ LeClair before the quarter came to a close.

Leading scorer and two-time conference Offensive Player of the Week, Joe Clark, took five shots against the Aggies, but was held without a goal for the first time this season. The sophomore attackman contributed in other ways, however, assisting on Mike Specht's goal at 6:27 of the first and LeClair's first at 4:33. Clark also picked up three ground balls.

Elizabethtown continued to blitz the Aggies (2-1) in the second, firing a season-high 20 shots in the quarter. The last time the Blue Jays hit the 20-shot mark in a period was April 17 of last season during the first quarter at Alvernia, a game they won 13-3 and unloaded 60 shots in.

Five more goals went up on the board for E-town before halftime. Nick Specht had a pair, LeClair completed his hat trick, Mike Specht scored his second and Jimmy Waters got in the goal column for the third time in 2015.

The Blue Jays would get into the final quarter before Del Val broke up the shutout bid on a Chris Coyle goal at 10:20.

Elizabethtown had a pair of special teams goals in the second half, getting a man-down marker from Connor Rowe at 5:44 of the third and a man-up goal from Waters at 12:12 of the fourth.

The news was not all rosy for the Jays. Starting goalie Chris Wenger was injured midway through the third when he was plowed over during play in front of his net. Wenger, who made seven saves and did not allow a goal, was forced to leave the game. Sophomore Trey Yetter played admirably in his place, stopping three shots over the final 21:36.

Elizabethtown forced 15 of Del Val's 36 turnovers and set the tone early. The Aggies were just 1-of-11 on clearing attempts in the first quarter and 15-of-29 for the game.

Jason Kelley caused a team-high three turnovers. Meakim and Matt Frey had two each, while eight other players finished with one. The defense also came up big when forced to play a man-down. The visitors were provided with eight extra-man opportunities, but the Blue Jays held their ground and kept the Aggies from cutting into their lead.

David Latimore was 7-of-8 on face-offs and Matt Rucci 4-of-9. Kelley and Frey gained control with five ground balls apiece.

DVC goalie Jacob Tomasik made 14 saves in defeat.

Elizabethtown debuts in the Landmark Conference Saturday at 1 p.m., when preseason favorite Susquehanna visits Wolf Field. The Crusaders upset No. 18 Franklin & Marshall, 8-7, in double overtime Wednesday.
