Swim teams swept by Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – Elizabethtown College men's and women's swimming were swept by Scranton Saturday afternoon, the Royals winning by nearly identical scores, 131-65 on the men's side and 131-66 on the women's. David Foery posted the Blue Jays' lone win in the 1000-yard freestyle.

Many Elizabethtown swimmers got their first shot at different events this season. Foery posted the men's top 1000 free time of the season by more than 20 seconds with an 11:14.37 and was 13 seconds clear of second-place finisher Ryan Dumais of Scranton. Tommy Kuhn, who has competed primarily in the sprint free, butterfly and relay events this fall, registered the team's third quickest time this season, 11:45.90.

In the 400 individual medley, freshman Ben Spangler finished runner-up with a time of 4:52.43, and Jake Stonecipher was fourth in 5:11.20.

The Blue Jays' 200 free relay team of Nick Petrella, Sam Hirshberg, Kuhn and Foery surpassed the team's previous best time of 1:35.46 by .72 seconds with a time of 1:34.74.

Elizabethtown's men saw their dual record drop to 2-5 with the loss to the Royals.

Bonnie Lisk, Amanda Long, Dayna Stewart and Rachel Engelhardt put in a strong swim in the 400 medley relay to start the day for the women. Their time of 4:26.39 was 24 seconds quicker than the Jays' former best of 4:50.60 turned in at the season-opening Schweikert Relays Oct. 23.

Elizabeth Finnegan took second in the 50 free, just missing out on a victory by one-tenth of a second. Finnegan touched in at 26.58, while Stewart set a new PR of 26.90.

The Blue Jay women are an even 4-4 after Saturday's defeat.

Elizabethtown returns to action in 2016 with a home meet against Washington (Md.) Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. The teams will swim at home twice in three days, as the meet against Frostburg State, which was originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29, has been moved to Monday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m.
