Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer loses heartbreaker to Scranton in double OT

SCRANTON, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's soccer was 1:40 away from forcing Wednesday night's Landmark Conference semifinal to a penalty shootout, but for the second straight game, Kelly Egan scored the golden goal to give Scranton the victory over Elizabethtown. The Royals advance to Saturday's championship game at Catholic.

Four days ago, Elizabethtown (11-7-1) and Scranton (13-3-2) couldn't produce a winner in regulation and needed overtime to decide the victor. Egan scored with less than two minutes in the first overtime period to give the Royals the win and the second seed in the conference playoffs.

Wednesday night went much the same way as the previous game, with neither side controlling the other.

Scranton nearly had the first goal of the contest 18 minutes in, but Gianna Vitolo's shot hit the crossbar and stayed out.

Maria Boretti won a header in the box off an E-town corner kick, but her scoring chance went wide. The Jays managed to outshoot Scranton 11-10 and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Opportunities were few and far between for both teams as the game proved to be a defensive struggle. E-town hit the crossbar in the second half as Lauren Fredericks saw her shot hit the woodwork in the 80th minute. Lindsay Hoagland forced Scranton goalie Krissy Welsh into a save a few minutes later.

The Blue Jays had the only two chances of the first overtime period, but Welsh stopped a header by Maddie Burkhardt in the 96th minute and Lauren Berry's attempt in the 98th minute.

Dana Robidoux saved the game twice for the Blue Jays, making back-to-back stops on Taylor Stevens and Egan in the 108th minute. The senior goalie bounced back up and forced a third shot high.

Moments later, Egan came through for the Royals with some very late heroics in the 109th minute. Nearing penalty kicks, Egan ended the semifinal by tapping in a cross at the goal mouth off a set piece, much like her goal four days ago at Ira R. Herr Field.
