Petrella wins 100 back, MSWIM sets eight fast times at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Nick Petrella won the 100-yard backstroke and Elizabethtown swam eight team season best times Saturday afternoon in a 184-69 defeat at Catholic.

Petrella cracked the 1:00 barrier with a 59.41 in the 100 back, the only swimmer in the event to do so. Teammate Sam Hirshberg was close behind with a career best time of 1:01.35. Petrella also finished second in the 200 back (2:10.10) and led off the 200 medley relay comprised of himself, Kieran Koehler, Tommy Kuhn and David Foery that put forth a season best 1:45.77.

Foery's 1:55.82 in the 200 freestyle was his fastest and the team's fastest of the season. The sophomore also set his best time (second on the team) in the 100 free with a 53.89.

In a close 200 breaststroke, Guillaume Gouronc missed out on a victory by just eight-tenths of a second, but still registered the quickest time by a Blue Jay at a 2:26.60.

Jake Stonecipher put in E-town's (0-2) fastest 500 free with a 5:57.05 and its quickest 200 butterfly (2:32.33). Ben Spangler topped the team with a 1:05.23 in the untraditional 100 individual medley.

Elizabethtown holds its home opener next Saturday, a double dual against Drew and FDU-Florham, at 1 p.m.
