Blue Jays finish third at Dutchmen Classic

LEBANON, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College golf team put forth its best showing of the fall season with a third-place finish at Monday afternoon's Dutchmen Classic, hosted by Lebanon Valley. Kyle Hakun and Chuck Johnston both put down rounds in the 70s, placing them in ties for sixth and ninth, respectively.

Hakun tied his season best score with a 78 to top all Blue Jays competing at the Lebanon Country Club. The Springfield, Pa., product was one of three players to finish at 6-over par and missed out on a top five by two strokes. Hakun also shot 78 at the Penn State Harrisburg Invitational Sept. 20, where he was also 6-over.

Monday's course was a par 72, playing at 6,272 yards.

If Johnston can repeat his performance in the Dutchmen Classic moving forward, his early season woes will be a thing of the past. Following rounds of 89 and 92 in his first two tournament appearances, the junior went for a 79 Monday. It was Johnston's second career top 10 and his first since the Chesnut Hill Griffin Fall Invitational last October.

Freshman Felix Goetttfert improved from his debut two weeks ago at the Elizabethtown Invitational by four strokes. He carded the third lowest round for the Jays with an 83 (+11), good for 20th place. Rick Stone shot 93 and Tyler Goldberg 99.

Elizabethtown's third-place finish was its best since tying for third at the Alvernia Fall Invitational Oct. 7, 2014. The Blue Jays' score of 333 (+45) was topped only by Lebanon Valley 'Blue', which won the title with a 312 (+24), and runner-up Eastern's 315 (+27). Eastern claimed the individual medalist with Matt Cocorikis the only player under par at a 71 (-1).

The Blue and Gray concludes its fall season Saturday at the Stevenson Fall Invitational.
