No. 18 Blue Jays clinch Landmark's top seed, Roderick wins No. 499 on Fevre's late goal

TOWSON, Md. – A perfected corner kick in the 81st minute resulted in Martin Fevre's eighth goal of the season and the No. 18 Elizabethtown College men's soccer team fled Goucher with a 2-1 win Wednesday night.

The victory was large on a number of fronts. It was No. 499 for 33rd year head coach Skip Roderick, who will try to become the seventh coach in NCAA Division III men's soccer history and 12th across all NCAA divisions to reach 500 wins Saturday afternoon at Drew. It also secured the top seed for Blue Jays in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championship tournament, ensuring a home semifinal game on either Tuesday, Nov. 3, or Wednesday, Nov. 4.

For the third game in a row, Elizabethtown (14-1-1, 6-0 Landmark) cranked out 20 or more shots, this time a season-high 30. Though they lingered around Goucher's goal for much of the evening, the Blue Jays weren't able to grasp the lead until Jack Rudy found twine from just inside the 18 off a Brent Batory corner in the 40th minute.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Ryan Belluch answered for the Gophers (5-9-1, 2-4 Landmark) 22 seconds into the second half. Belluch's first goal of the season was set up by Andrew Marcantonio as Goucher looked to put an end to E-town's seven-game winning streak and nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1).

Elizabethtown responded with a flurry of shots in an attempt to regain the lead. Sam Feehrer, who had 16 shots in 14 games prior to last Saturday's tilt against Lancaster Bible, now has 20 in his last two games after a career-high 12 against the Gophers. His attempt in the 51st minute hit the crossbar, but stayed out to keep it a 1-1 game.

Both keepers were busy, too. Goucher's Daniel Hendry made 10 saves and the Jays' Rodrigo Barrera five, with another credited to E-town's defense.

Belluch nearly gave Goucher the lead in the 73rd minute, but he was denied by Barrera on his first attempt and hit the crossbar on the follow up try.

With the clock ticking under 10 minutes, Fevre lined up to take a corner. Always dangerous, the Frenchman has already scored twice directly off corners this season. This time, however, the ball was played into the box, where Aaron Rathsam got it to Feehrer. The sophomore from Reading headed it back to Fevre, who beat Hendry at 80:41 for the eventual game-winner.

E-town, which was ranked third in the initial NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Ranking earlier Wednesday, equaled its highest win total since 2009 and closed in on history for Roderick. If the Blue Jays are to win Saturday, Roderick would join Brandeis University's Michael Coven as the second DIII coach to achieve 500 wins this season. Coven, who has been at the helm for 43 years, won his 500th back on Sept. 12.

The Blue Jays invade Madison, N.J., for a 1 p.m. start Saturday.
