Scranton strikes in overtime to down women's soccer

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Four days after beating Scranton on the road in regulation, it took more than 90 minutes to decide a winner in Wednesday evening's Landmark Conference semifinal between the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team and the visiting Royals. Christina Akalski scored shortly into the first overtime period to send Scranton back to the conference final.

For the second straight game, the Royals (10-7-2) scored first on Elizabethtown (13-4). Michaela Arbus got down the right side all the way to the end line before cutting a cross back toward the middle. Gianna Vitolo was there to run on to Arbus' feed and bury it into the net to put Scranton ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute.

The Blue Jays settled into the game thereafter and began to assert themselves. The next five shots belonged to EC, and the fifth one ended up in the goal.

Kaceyanne Cerankowski dribbled her way down the left side of the box and sent a left-footed cross across the mouth of the goal. Lauren Berry timed it perfectly to knock the ball into an open goal for her team-leading 12th of the season in the 20th minute.

Lindsay Hoagland had a chance to put E-town ahead in the 44th minute. Her initial shot was blocked, but the deflection came right back to her. Her second attempt went toward goal, but Krissy Welsh secured to keep it 1-1 going into the half.

Welsh came under fire 30 seconds into the second half, stopping Kara Weller and Berry on consecutive shots. Welsh finished the night with ten saves, including seven in the second half.

The Jays continued to pressure the Scranton defense as the second half wore on. Cerankowski had her goal-scoring attempt stopped by Welsh moments before the Royals' keeper was there to deny Morgan Chambers' header off the ensuing E-town corner kick.

Despite outshooting Scranton 23-7, the two teams saw the second half end without another goal, forcing overtime to decide a winner.

That did not take long, however, as Arbus against had the ball along the end line and sent in a cross. The ball found the foot of Sarah Andrews, whose one-timer was saved by Dana Robidoux at the right post. In the right place at the right time, Arbus collected the rebound and directed it across the front of the goal to Christina Akalski at the far post. Akalski one-touched it into the net to end the game and send Scranton to the Landmark Conference Championship.

For Elizabethtown, Robidoux finished with two saves. The Jays will now wait and see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
