Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer draws Scranton, denied postseason on tiebreaker

SCRANTON, Pa. – Fitzgerald Field is never an easy place to play, and the Elizabethtown men's soccer team knew that ahead of the Landmark finale at Scranton. On most any day, playing the Royals to a scoreless tie on a field they haven't lost more than twice on in a season since 2011 would be considered a success. On Saturday, however, it kept both teams out of the postseason.

Both sides entered the game part of a four-way tie for the fourth and final conference tournament spot. Moravian removed itself from contention with a 4-2 loss at Drew, and Goucher kept things interesting on their home field by allowing Susquehanna to grab a 1-1 tie for their first point of the season.

With Goucher at 11 points, a win by either E-town (7-5-3, 3-3-2 Landmark) or Scranton (9-6-3, 3-3-2 Landmark) would have put the victor into the conference tourney with 13 points. Instead, the draw forced a three-way tie, and left Goucher with the final spot because of it's 1-0-1 record against the two other schools. Elizabethtown was 0-0-2 and Scranton 0-1-1.

The Royals had Saturday's earliest chances. Kevin Kozic, one of the top scoring threats in the Landmark, got a shot off a throw in but the Blue Jays kept it out with a header on the goal line. Elizabethtown would get a corner kick in the 20th minute, but nothing came of it, and the visitors got only two shots in the half.

E-town came close to taking the lead in the 64th minute when Cal Graziano's header was denied by the Scranton defense. The Blue Jays continued to pressure and were nearly rewarded in the final 10 minutes. Shane Votto would hit the crossbar with a shot and on the rebound David Boretti did the same. Graziano's shot off Boretti's rebound missed just wide.

Scranton keeper Eric Hintz, who made four saves in the contest, stopped Andrew Sandridge's attempt in the 90th minute.

Two 10-minute overtimes would not produce any offense, either. The Jays had three shots, with Hintz having to make the only save on a Scott Hess shot late in the first overtime.

Rodrigo Barrera played all 110 minutes in goal for Elizabethtown, stopping one shot.

With the season drawing to a close, 10 seniors depart. David Boretti, Eric Borkowicz, Nick Clarke, Kristopher Davis, Kyle Fowler, Andres Hartman, Andrew Sandridge, Justin Signora, Dylan Sisler and Phill Spector collectively helped the program to 36 wins, four winning seasons and three Commonwealth Conference tournament appearances, including last year's conference championship game.
