One of the winningest coaches in Division III lacrosse history,
Terry Corcoran completed his eighth season as the head coach of Elizabethtown’s men’s lacrosse team in 2013, and 31st overall.
Corcoran owns 273 career victories, a total that ranks him tied for sixth all-time in Division III and tied for fifth among active coaches. In eight seasons with the Blue Jays, Corcoran has amassed a 71-52 record and five trips to the Middle Atlantic Conference Semifinals.
E-town got off to a fast start in 2013, winning seven of its first nine games. Its only losses in that span were to No. 2 Stevenson, the eventual NCAA Division III Champion, and No. 17 Union (N.Y.). Defeats in four of their last five games, two of which came in overtime, kept the Blue Jays just out of the league playoffs for the second year in a row, as they finished 8-6.
In 2012, the Jays went 7-8 and narrowly missed a Commonwealth Conference playoff berth in the first year of the Commonwealth and Freedom Conference split within the MAC.
Brendan Corcoran '12 was named a USILA Scholar All-American, joining Aaron Weber '10 as the only two Blue Jays to earn the award. Three players: Corcoran,
Cory Boushell '13 and
Nick Thompson '13 were named all-conference first team.
Corcoran did a fantastic job in leading a relatively inexperienced squad to the conference semifinals in 2011. The Blue Jays got victories in three of their last four regular season games to reach the MAC Playoffs. E-town, the sixth seed, then went on the road to upset No. 3 seed Eastern University in the quarterfinal round, before falling to Widener, the eventual conference champion, in a tight semifinal contest. Six of Corcoran’s players earned All-MAC recognition. After graduating an All-American player in 2010 and many other weapons, E-town’s 9-7 overall record was a strong continuation to the program’s recent success. Corcoran was awarded with MAC Coach of the Year honors following the 2011 season.
While 2011 may have showcased one of Corcoran's finest coaching jobs, the 2010 season finished as the best in the lacrosse program's 12-year history. Corcoran's Jays clicked off seven straight wins in MAC play to take control of the conference standings. E-town dropped a single conference game on its way to a 12-1 record and the league's regular season championship. The Blue Jays entered the conference tournament as the top seed for the first time and received a quarterfinal bye. The MAC semifinals weren't kind, however, as Widener ended E-town's season there. Despite the tough end, Corcoran's team won 12 games for a second straight season, tied for the most in team history.
In the six seasons prior to 2011, Elizabethtown finished above .500 in conference play. In five of those six seasons, the Jays have gone to the postseason and in three of them, they've won 10 games or more.
Formerly the head coach at Washington (Md.) College from 1983-94, the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 and 1996 and Skidmore College from 1997 to 2005, Corcoran has twice been named USILA Division III Coach of the Year. He earned the honor in both 1985 and 2005. Corcoran has coached 11 of his teams to the NCAA playoffs and produced over 60 All-Americans. Corcoran also coached the 1990 USA World Team Champions in Perth, Australia.
In 2012, Corcoran was inducted into the Skidmore College Athletics Hall of Fame along with his 2005 Liberty League Championship Team. The '05 Thoroughbreds, which entered the hall as a
Team of Distinction, won the school's first ever conference championship in men's lacrosse and advanced to their inaugural NCAA Division III Tournament.
A three-time All-American at Hobart College, Corcoran led the Statesmen to NCAA Division II-III Championships in 1976 and 1977, respectively. In 1978, he led the nation in scoring and was chosen as the top attackman in Divisions II-III. Corcoran scored three goals in the 1978 North-South Game and was inducted into Hobart's Hall of Fame in 1992. Corcoran, a native of Corning, N.Y., was also inducted into the Corning Hall of Fame in 1984. In October 2010, Washington (Md.) College became the third establishment to induct him into its hall of fame.
