A pioneer coach at Elizabethtown College, Julia Risser's tenure correlated with the growth of women's athletics in stature and numbers. Starting in 1955, Risser coached field hockey for six seasons, never losing more than two games in a campaign. Risser also coached women's basketball from 1955-61 and started the women's tennis program, coaching the inaugural varsity team in 1961.
Risser, also a physical education instructor at the College, founded the Women's Athletic Association (WAA) in 1957, which was designed to further opportunities in athletics for women on campus.
Risser was named Central Pennsylvania Field Hockey First Team Coach in 1958 and Mideast Tournament First Team Coach that same year.
